About

Forced to be a programmer by love and not by choice, I am discovering that there is an incredible world outside of Microsoft technologies that needs exploring!
I have been a .Net programmer for 8+ years. At the end of High School with no real clue what I was going to do with my life, programing called to me. I am a country boy who didn't even get the internet until I was 17 years old. The first day I had it, I learned how to make my own website via howstuffworks.com and less than a year later was enrolled in college to get a Degree in Software Development. I spent one year at a "normal" college and realized it was wasting my time re-learning History and Science and NOT learning how to program, so I finished my Associates Degree at a Technical School.
I started work as a VB.Net Developer 7 months after .Net came off the shelves and have since worked in VB.Net and C# in Desktop and ASP.Net applications.
4 years ago I purchased a Macbook Pro with the intent of booting it into Windows XP and have not looked back since. The discovery of OS X has led me to reexamine my entire outlook on development.
Technologies such as Objective-C, Ruby, Python, PHP, jQuery, CSS and countless others have massively expanded my horizons. In the years since opening my eyes I have published an iPhone application, built multiple Ruby scripts, developed sites in PHP using MySQL and explored more technologies than I can remember.
I am at a point in my life where I find myself NEEDING to work with inspired people who want to change the world.
My Work
Here are some of the things I've been doing lately:
- jQuery - A development framework that lets you do some really "cool" things on web pages. You can see examples on this page when you click on the top links or click on an image on the "Images" page.
- GhettoTracker - An iPhone app that I was paid to build by a local startup company named Six3Six Studios. I did not design the app but I did develop it from start to finish. The link will take you to iTunes.
- SkyBlueMorning.com - my wife is an artist. She's also a hippy in that she loves this planet. So she uses her abilities to create green products that she sells through her website built by me. I am not incredibly proud of this site as it was the first I tried after starting to improve myself, but it's still miles better than anything I'd done before.
- Ruby - A programming language made by a Japanese man to be beautiful and poetic. If you have an inkling of an interest in programming, you should try Ruby (click the link to program it straight in your browser). I've been using this language for simple scripts on my Mac. It's like playing with programming, something I haven't done in a long time.
- MidAmericaSavings.com - This site doesn't exist yet, but it will SOON! Ben Taylor and I are working on it together for someone else. It will be a site where you can get coupons for local companies. I am writing it in PHP and Ben is designing it. We are both learning as we go and it is fun and exciting.
- JamesPWright.com - My development blog. As with most blogs out there, it's not updated often enough. It's not really a personal blog but is intended to be where I talk about my programming.
